President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed a federal emergency declaration for California, authorizing funds and resources to fight the fires.
“We are prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to control these fires and to help rebuild and make sure we get back to normal. It’s going to be a long road,” President Biden said. “It’s going to take time.”
The U.S. Department of Defense said on Wednesday it would “work to provide additional firefighting personnel and capabilities” to California as it battles the raging wildfires.
The total cost of the fires could be between $52 billion and $57 billion or more, according to an analysis by the AccuWeather Global Weather Center.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department has battled four life-threatening wildfires that have killed at least five people, burned more than 1,100 buildings and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate.
“The Los Angeles County Fire Department was prepared for one or two large wildfires, but not four, especially given these steady winds and low humidity,” Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said Wednesday.
